"The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost was written in 1920. While living in New Hampshire, Frost and a friend, Edward Thomas, used to walk through the forest searching for plants. The two men would often find paths that seemingly lead to nowhere. Thomas, in particular, after choosing a path, pondered what might have happened if the men had chosen the 'other' path. Frost, with Edward Thomas in mind, began "The Road Not taken" in England, pontificating about how, in life, we are confronted by different choices and must make hard decisions.
Upon returning to the United States, Frost learned in a letter that Thomas was considering joining the British Armed Forces and sought out his friend's advice. Frost, tongue in cheek, finished the poem and sent it off to Thomas. Edward Thomas eventually joined the Armed Forces and would subsequently be killed in battle.
